Pet turf and dog runs
Dogs are one of the main reasons Havasu owners switch to turf. A pet area needs a few things a regular lawn doesn't.
Dogs wear paths into natural grass, dig along fences, leave yellow spots and track mud indoors. Synthetic turf solves most of that, but only if it's built for pets. The big issue is urine: if it can't drain through the turf and base, odor builds up quickly in the heat.
What's different about pet turf?
- Drainage through the turf. Products made for pets drain quickly through the backing so liquid doesn't sit on top.
- A base that drains too. The rock base under the turf needs to let liquid pass through and away, not hold it.
- Infill choice. Some infills are sold specifically to help control pet odor. Ask what the installer uses and how often it needs to be refreshed.
- Shorter, sturdier blades. These are easier to clean and hold up better to running and digging.
How do I keep it clean?
- Pick up solid waste promptly.
- Rinse the potty area regularly with a hose, more often in summer.
- Use an enzyme cleaner made for artificial turf if odor builds up.
- Brush and top off infill as the installer recommends.
Keep paws in mind
Turf in direct sun gets hot enough in a Havasu summer to be uncomfortable for paws. Put the dog area where it gets afternoon shade, add a shade sail, or plan to cool it with a hose before letting the dog out. Leave a shaded spot with water nearby, and keep a close eye on older dogs and puppies.
The installer prices the job after measuring the area and seeing what has to come out, what the ground is like and how the space drains. We don't quote prices, and a figure given over the phone before a site visit is only a rough starting point.

Common questions
Will artificial turf smell if my dog uses it?
It can if urine doesn't drain or the area isn't rinsed. A pet-rated product, a draining base, the right infill and regular rinsing keep odor down.
Can dogs dig through artificial turf?
Determined diggers can damage edges and seams. Secure edging and a well-compacted base help, and some owners add a border along fences.
